Millennium Tightrope WalkHow utterly
disappointing for Coventry that the proposed live coverage on the BBC of the Millennium
tightrope walk between St Michael's and Holy Trinity was pulled from the schedule at the
last moment.
I am sure my family was not the only one to have made the
decision to stay at home and watch the spectacle courtesy of the BBC rather than travel in
and face the hassle of looking for city centre parking/crowds (we have small children)
etc.
We live in Kenilworth off a main bus route so public
transport was not going to be an option.
Our party group tuned in to the BBC at 9.10pm in case the
walk was moved forward but by after 10.30 had realised it was obviously not going to be
shown.
I do appreciate that the BBC were working to tight,
stressful schedules but feel the original nature of the stunt was such that it should have
been bumped into another adjoining time slot in place of some of the duller articles that
followed.
Yes I know that's churlish and would have meant other
communities being disappointed but why did Coventry have to be the one to be pulled.
At the very least a comment from the presenters that the
stunt would not be shown would have shown some courtesy to Midland viewers.
My sympathies go to all who were connected with the
planning and delivering of the tightrope walk. I am sure no words could express the
frustration they must have felt at the time but I bet that didn't stop some people having
a go at finding some suitable ones!
A merry 2000 to you all.
