SEP 99] WARWICKSHIRE CONSTABULARY MEDIA STATEMENT
Chief Constable
Investigation
As a result of allegations made by staff of the Warwickshire
Constabulary in relation to the actions of the Chief Constable of the force, Mr Andrew
Timpson, the Warwickshire Police Authority has called for an investigation.
They have asked Norman Bettison, the Chief Constable
of Merseyside Police, to undertake the investigation and have referred the matter to the
Police Complaints Authority. The PCA has agreed to supervise the investigation and that
role will be undertaken by the Deputy Chair of the PCA, Mrs Molly Meacher.
The Chief Constable of Warwickshire, Mr Timpson, has taken
sick leave from this afternoon (13 September), and the Police Authority have been
informed. The Deputy Chief Constable (Mr M J Brewer) will carry out the duties of the
Chief Constable during his absence.
No further comment will be made until the investigating
officer has reported further to the Warwickshire Police Authority.
