Warwickshire
Police dog Jack has retired. He leaves the Constabulary to join a local
gamekeeper as his companion and helper.
Jack, aged six, will join forces with gamekeeper Owen Stainsthorp at the Arbury Hall
estate. As a companion and friend to Mr Stainsthorp, Jack will help to patrol the four and
a half thousand acre estate, as hes transported around in the back of Mr
Stainsthorps pick-up truck!
Jack has been working with northern area dog handler PC John Davies for five years and
PC Davies is very sad to see him go. He said:
"Ive worked, trained and lived with Jack for five years so naturally I am
going to miss him. He is a brilliant police dog with an excellent record, retrieving
thousands of pounds worth of property and making over 60 arrests.
"Although it is hard to end the partnership, all police dogs have to retire some
time and I am delighted that Jack will retire to Arbury Hall where he can continue to lead
a helpful life and enjoy the countryside as well."
Jack is one of the few dogs to have been presented with a commendation for bravery and
"dogg-ed" determination to get his man.
Last July PC Davies and Jack were called to a reported break-in at a school in
Clifton-on-Dunsmore, Rugby. It was the middle of the night and pitch black, but Jack found
the scent of the intruder and followed his track for over an hour. Through woodland and
undergrowth, Jack continued until he came to a lake. Jack bravely jumped in, found the
intruder hiding under the water and arrested him, even though the man had kicked Jack in
the mouth leaving an eight inch tear. The man is now serving a 15 month sentence for other
offences.
Jack has also had other notable successes. He recovered £5000 of micro chips from a
wood in Rugby, sniffed out a pound of cannabis in Stratford and didnt give into
temptation one day when he recovered ten large boxes of cakes!
