A 27-year-old man walked home
with a broken leg after falling off a bridge in Leamington yesterday.
Despite suffering serious
injuries the man managed to pick himself up and walk back to his home in
Warwick Street following the incident.
He was taken to Warwick hospital
to be treated for his injuries, which also included a broken jaw.
The man had fallen over the
suspension bridge over the River Leam in Mill Road at 3.30am.
Police said the man had been out
in the town centre with friends watching the England – Germany game
and had visited several local pubs.
DC Andy Smith appealed to anyone
who might have seen the man before the incident to contact CID in
Leamington on 01926 415000.
He added that police were not
treating the incident as suspicious.
Police all over Warwickshire
were inundated with calls about fans’ drunken behaviour following
England’s win over Germany in Euro 2000.
Following ugly scenes on the
streets of Brussels and Charleroi, there were fears that the
celebrations could get out of hand.
England have now been threatened
with expulsion from the tournament
if the behaviour of their fans does not improve.
Officers were called to numerous
incidents in every town following complaints about noise from members of
the public, but made only one arrest for drunkenness, in Rugby.
Insp David Barratt of
Warwickshire police said the mood in the streets was largely good-humoured.
He said:
”People responded to
the advice given by officers to leave the town centre areas and to go
home.”
