Police and fire experts have
launched an investigation after a blaze nearly gutted classrooms at a
Nuneaton school.
The wooden annexe at
Stockingford Junior School in Cross Street, Nuneaton, which holds
several classrooms, caught light shortly before 2.45am today.
Three fire crews from Nuneaton
and Bedworth raced to the scene and managed to contain the flames before
they spread.
The damage at the school was
still being assessed today, but the school was open as normal.
Police and fire investigators
are carrying out inquiries and have not ruled out the possibility of
foul play.
Leading Firefighter Stephen
Manning said quick action by his crews stopped the fire spreading
further.
He said:
“Obviously there was a
danger of the whole building being damaged because the wooden
construction made it very flammable. We managed to stop it going
through the classrooms.
“There
was some damage to the corridor and to the outside of the building,
but we had the fire under control in about 30 minutes.”
