Coventry
Bears fought their way into the semi-finals of the Rugby League
conference play-offs with a magnificent win at Manchester on Saturday.
They
overcame their northern rivals despite having a very inexperienced
team. The Bears are in their first season, with many players trying
out the 13-man code for the first time, while Manchester’s squad are
well used to the game.
The
game was balanced on a knife-edge until the final minute. Coventry
will now face Rotherham Giants at Warrington’s Wilderspool stadium
next Sunday at 5pm, following the Super League game between Warrington
Wolves and Salford City Reds.
Dan
Price opened the scoring for the Bears by catching a bomb from Alex
Van der Walt in the corner. James Cathcart converted and added a
penalty and drop goal to give Coventry the edge at half time by nine
points to seven.
The
furious pace of the first half continued unabated in the second. Dan
price scored a second try to take the score to 13-9, but Manchester
were soon back in the game and levelled the score.
When
James Cathcart scored a penalty it looked as if the visitors might
hold on for a narrow win against the team that finished top of the
Conference in the league section of the season.
Manchester
threw everything at Coventry, who held on grimly.
Then,
with only a minute left on the clock, Manchester kicked down field
from inside their own half.
Adam
Lindsay charged down the kick and somehow managed t stay on his feet
and catch the ball before racing 30 yards to score a try.
James
Cathcart delighted the travelling fans by kicking the conversion to
seal the victory.
