Coventry is to be
given a permanent mark as the home of Standard Triumph after members of its special
interest club agreed to raise funds for a monument in the city.
The 1.5 metre high stainless steel model, which will depict the Standard trademark,
will be situated outside the Standard Social Club on Coventry Business Park, Tile Hill
Lane and will cost around £5,000.
TR Register, who organises social events and activities for the Triumph members, has
supported the scheme and is asking its 7,500 members nationwide to contribute to the cost.
However, TR Registers Coventry group leader Dave Lewis admits that despite having
all the practicalities in place there is still some way to go on the finances.
He said:
"What this whole thing has shown is the feeling in Coventry towards Standard
Triumph.
"We have already had a large donation from a local company called Exhall Plating
and an offer to manufacture the actual monument from Earlsdon Sheet Metal Work, so people
are really pulling together.
"We have had permission from Arlington, who are the developers of the Coventry
Business Park, to put the tribute up and we have been given planning consent so we are
nearly there.
"The problem we have run into is that the cost of doing the ground-working to
secure the monument is far greater than we thought, so it would be fantastic if a Coventry
company who could carry out this kind of work would be interested in giving us a good
deal."
