[10 JUN 99] THE REVIEW : BEYOND BREAKING GLASS

Hazel O'Connor - Beyond Breaking GlassHazel O'Connor returned triumphantly to Coventry with an astonishingly explicit and honest show entitled 'Beyond Breaking Glass', first premiered last year at the Edinburgh Festival.  MORE

[23 MAY 99] BANDS2C : PAINT

Paint is an apt name for this band. In fact I think they should be re-named. ’Watching Paint Dry’ is the most obvious one that springs to mind.  MORE

[22 MAY 99] BANDS2C : BULLIT

Bullit are a young, local four-piece band, with an already enthusiastic following and this was their first gig.  MORE

[31 MAR 99] THE STORY SO FAR : RODDY 'RADIATION' BYERS

Roddy Radiation has always been a bit of a tortured soul, but I’ve always had a very healthy respect for him, because essentially he’s a local working class poet, who isn’t afraid to let people know that he sings what he means.  MORE

[31 MAR 99] BANDS2C : ENDLESS KNOT

Endless Knot have been in existence for 2 years and their experience shows. As soon as they take to the stage, comparisons with The Levellers come to mind, but this is by no means a criticism, because they make their own unique blend of Celtic/rock/reggae.  MORE

[22 MAR 99] BANDS2C : BOILING PETER BREAD

I like a band with a good weird name and you can’t get much weirder than ‘Boiling Peter Bread’. In fact they have the dubious honour of being called ‘the worst named band in the West Midlands’, by Neil Colcouny of the Melody Maker.  MORE

[09 MAR 99] THE STORY SO FAR : NEVILLE STAPLE

Neville Staple has always been a colourful character around town in Coventry; the original ‘rude-boy’. Not content with only being the roadie for the Coventry Automatics, he thrust himself into the limelight as an unforgettable frontman, sharing the limelight with Terry Hall.  MORE

[09 MAR 99] THE STORY SO FAR : DR HOOK

[09 MAR 99] BANDS2C : EMPIRE MAYDE

Can dance music cut it live? Usually the answer to this is a resounding no. The beats get lost, the singer outside of a studio is usually shown up for what they are, someone with a pretty slight voice, but unused to performance. Well Empire Mayde are different.  MORE

[02 MAR 99] THE STORY SO FAR : CHARLEY ANDERSON

In the mid seventies, Charley Anderson was an unforgettable sight around Coventry, with his long flowing Marleyesque rasta locks. Back then he led his roots reggae band Hardtop 22. When this group disbanded in 1979, Charley and other members of Hardtop 22, teamed up with Neol Davies and myself to form The Selecter.  MORE

[02 MAR 99] BANDS2C : THE SUPERHEROES

At the risk of being called a ‘groupie’, I have to confess that I’ve seen the Superheroes twice in the past week; once at the Hand and Heart on Saturday and again on Thursday. At the first gig, I was fairly sure that I’d seen the future of ska music, but after the second gig at the Colin Campbell - I’m sure.  MORE

[02 MAR 99] RICHARD DREYFUSS AT THE BELGRADE

This past week has been a hectic time. Monday evening (22 February) saw me down at the Belgrade Theatre for the opening night of American writer Neil Simon’s play, ‘The Prisoner of 2nd Avenue’, starring no less than Hollywood superstar Richard Dreyfuss.  MORE
